Replacing renault with yanmar-shifter/throttle now backwards

I just purchased a 1980 Hunter 27. The original Renault Diesel is shot and I am replacing it with a rebuilt Yanmar. We just realized that the shifter and throttle are now operating backwards. When you push the shifter forwards it puts the engine in reverse, pushing the shifter backwards puts engine in forward. Same for the throttle, pushing forwards puts engine in idle, pulling backwards is full throttle. It was all normal with the Renault. The boat has the original Yacht Specialties Company pedestal. Is there an easy work-around for this?

you can get a bracket from Mac Boring for the gear shift that will solve that problem it bolts the side of the gear box and you mount the cable on it ...then to the shift lever on the gear box....this is assuming you have a gm20 model yanmar ...as for the throttle i am not sure about that part ...or you may be able to change the levers in the pedestal by turning them over 180 degrees and make it happen ...and teleflex may have a kit to fix this for the cables ...this info is just something to think about and help you find a way to solve this ....sorry i can't be of more help

On a lot of the levers you can reverse the arm inside so it pulls instead of pushes. Had to do that on mine when I repowered.

Thank you very much woodster and Capt jgw, I'll look into both of those ideas.
