The compressor for my refrigerator has died and prices for a professional replacement are over $2000! Has anyone replaced the compressor and if so, what brand/model did you get and how big a job was it?
I have a Catalina 310 built in 2001 with an Alder Barbour compressor.

That might be a reasonable (perhaps a bit on the high side) price. It looks like the compressor is $800-$1000 at Defender (http://www.defender.com/product3.jsp?path=-1|2276179|2276204|2276226|2530817&id=1599545) depending on the model, and at $100-$150 per hour labor plus any other random part that might be needed you are probably close to $2k. But I have not actually replaced mine so I don't know. Although I also have a 2001 C310 (#48) so hopefully your issue is not a portent of things to come for mine!

I replaced mine earlier this year because it was very inefficient and always needed to be recharged. So I just replaced it with the same AB system but the new model is much more effective. Got new compressor, new evaporator and ran new coolant lines and also insulated the fridge while this was happening. Did not do it myself but rather paid the pros although I did the insulating. New unit is much better and also went solar so am now energy independent. Went with the same AB unit because I wanted the same footprint and no surprises when installing. When I get to the boat in a few days I will let you knowthe model number and total cost.

Took me a while to get to the boat (since this is not sailing season in GA) but I checked my fridge replacement and I went with the current versions of the same Adler Barbour system that came with the boat (in 1999). Replaced the evaporator with the VD150, replaced the compressor with CU100 and also had all tubing replaced that carries the refrigerant. This was all done professionally and cost $2,500.
