I have a 1975, S2 8.0c that I am rebuilding. I have stripped it down to the hull and have re-cored the deck, installed a new sole, stripped all the carpet out, and am in the process of laying 2 layers of 6oz fiberglass throughout the entire interior to smooth the interior walls that I will prime and paint. I have 5 ports on the boat that are 4x14 (2 in the bow, 2 in the stern, 1 in the head facing the cockpit) I have space to install 7x14 ports. What are the pros and cons to increasing the ports from 4x14 to 7x14 in the bow and the stern? I am not sure if I want to increase the port size in the head. I have been looking at the Beckson: Self Drain Opening Ports in the sailboatowners.com store.

I used two Beckson 5 X12 s in my head area and there of good quality for a plastic port

If i was doing a lot of time outside of Long Island Sound were breaking waves were a concern i would have picked a metal unit

Bigger windows give more light and more ventilation. Don't skimp on quality.

Sometimes you can get a good deal on Becksons from the overstock area at beckson.com. Depends on what they have available at the time. I needed some lenses and gaskets a few years ago and I was able to buy complete ports there for less than the price of the parts.

Thanks Joe. I will take a look. Do you like your Becksons? Any issues with them?

Styx,

Becksons are very good ports. I really like ours as compared to the newer Lewmars which reportedly leak for lots of reasons. Mine do NOT leak. We have eight of them, 5 x 12. I've rebedded maybe three or four of them on our 26 year old boat (have had her for 14 years).

Here's a lot of stuff that should help you about them. Most of it is for removing the old ones, which would not be your case in putting in new ones, but there are a LOT of helpful links. I made the "removal tool" as recommended and it works very well.

Good luck.

Check out the wall thickness before buying Becksons. I looked into replacing and found they had the right shape but were limited to 1" wall thickness (IIRC). I have a thicker wall.

Styx,
Have you seen the New Found Metals ports? Stainless available for about $115 more each than Becksons.
