My wife and I are looking closely at a couple 42 Passage boats we really like (1990 or 1991). A couple questions; I believe they have the original aluminum water and holding tanks and wondered what the expected cost to replace with plastic ones would be? I am pretty handy and also wonder if this is a reasonable do it yourself project? Thoughts?

I also woulk like to know if anyone has enlarged the holding tank size 9or added a tank and use one for each head)? If so where did you locate it? The tank size is pretty minimal in my view.

Also on my last boat I installed a y valve with a overboard pump of the holding tank when over 3 miles out. Any thoughts, opinions and advice is welcomed.

SF Bay Area boat.
Thx
Roger

I have a 1991 H42 and , yes had to replace the waste tank- I did a post on it- it wasnt that hard-I used a Ronco plastic tank. The water tanks- I also did a post on refurb'ing my midships tank- that was a bit of a pain, but worth the effort. I cut 2 x holes and fitted Beckson inspection ports- again search my post for detailed info. Still havent had a chance to get to forward water tank yet to add inspection ports and refurb. but I cant imagine how you would be able to remove and repalce forward tank without demolishing a lot of fiberglass work under that front bunk.

I was going to point you to eianm, as he has done part of this...but he chimed in.

The real answer will be in how much you do yourself, vs paying someone to do it.

IF you are doing it yourself, then it is reasonable project, but will require taking up a bunch of flooring some appliances (Water heater, etc) if you replace them ...doing as eianm and repairing or cleaning or patching will require MUCH less removal of stuff. R/R the fore tank will require considerable glass and cabinet work or else cutting it up in place and putting in two or more smaller tanks as there is just not room to take it out whole.

If you are paying shop rates and and allowing them to keep the boat...I would look at some P42s that have already had the work done.

Holding was pretty decent on mine, and it had a macerator and valve for dumping outside the limits. We were in the process of changing to a hold n treat system for each head. The salon head was an easy one, the aft head, could not find a place for the unit or the tank, no matter what we tried and they are just out of range of each other for one unit.

Roger:

Find the search tab and key in eianm and tank. That should get you to where you want to go.
