I am in the process of replacing the bulkheads on my 77 ODay 25 tall rig/fin keel following a dismasting due to wood rot. I spent a full day removing the vanity/sink and shelves above as well as the starboard back cushion to get access to get access to the bulkhead. I used a dremel tool to cut through the glass tabbing that was done to keep the bulkhead secured to the inside of the hull and removed all fasteners located around the perimeter of the bulkhead, the bulkhead was able to be removed without too much difficulty.
I'm now starting to de-construct the port side and notice that there is a horizontal teak trim piece about a third of the way up the port bulkhead that hides a horizontal seak a couple of inches higher than the port settee.
Here are my questions:
Was the original port bulkhead one piece or were they all seamed as mine was?
Any suggestions on a kind or brand of marine plywood to use for the replacement of both sides?
What do you suggest I use to smooth the inside of the hull where I have cut away the tabbing used to hold the bulkhead in place. I want to be careful not to damage the inside of the hull but want to make smooth surface so I can glass in the new tabbing.
I've read that I should glass the whole bulkhead to keep any future water intrusion out of the wood, should I glass it before I install it back in the boat or install it, do the glass tabbing to the hull, then glass the whole bulkhead?
