We are having a hard time raising the mainsail the last couple of feet on our 2002 Hunter 270. The mainsail in new and heavy (over 7 ounces) but not full battened. One of the problem fixes we are considering is replacing the sheave at the mast top for the mainsail halyard, possibly with a ball bearing sheave, and hopefully with a larger sheave that would have less friction (if space in the masthead casting permits). We would appreciate advice from anyone who has worked on the mainsail mast-top sheave.

I would suggest that you contact the spar mfg regarding the replacement sheaves. I was going to do the same thing with ball bearing sheaves and it was suggested by one of the hardware mfg. that this is not a good idea because of the type of load on the bearing.

At 10y/o I'd pull that mast top sheave and ck it for wear or friction along with every point back to the winch. I also wouldn't rule out problems at the blocks on the deck at the mast base or organizers. lastly your new upgraded sail deserves nice hi-tech sail slides to hoist/drop as effortlessly as possible.

I'm overdue for the same project. I'd like mine to drop into a stack pack like they do at the boat shows, friction free. let us know how it goes.
Good luck. Mike

If your masthead sheave turns by hand and appears to be round, etc., I would rule that out. You might want to replace your luff sail slides with another product called "Allslip", which are black and of a material that slides inside the mast much easier. You also might want to consider spraying your mast groove with McLube.
