Has anyone replaced lifeline stancions w/double bases on a '78 28', or any model that has the same installation? Is it simply a matter of unbolting the stancions and then rebedding and bolting on new ones, or is there some inner hull reinforcment "stuff" that's going to rear up and bite me?

stanchions

on my 27 the stanchion bolts had "fender" washers below (as seen on many production boats) this is inadequate. If your replacing them or just rebedding what you have, my suggestion is make up a backing plate of aluminum or stainless. I used 1/8" plate, cut 1" larger than the stanchion base, drilled 4 holes and used lock nuts. This I feel is adequate. good luck

Stanchion Upgrade

I just put new stanchions on my '76 Oday 25. Initially, I put fender washers to spread the load underneath, but when I tightened the bolts down I found the balsa core was soft and wet. I had to drill out the balsa and reinforce the area with new epoxy and glass. In summary, check your core and if it soft, fix it first, or the new bedding won't last long and you'll have leaks or worse.

Stanchion Upgrade

I agree with Dave, check your core. The core rotted under one of my stanchions and it snaped right through the deck. Trust me, it is not fun to fix.
