It's time to replace the upper wires (vinyl covered 1/8") of my lazy jacks. So do I replace with the same kind of wire, some kind of high tech line, or regular old 1/4" yacht braid? Boat's a Freedom 25. What would you do?

Updates

Tricia, Replace with similar materials, unless you can upgrade by adding strength or reducing weight aloft.

Could not find 1/8 coated wire so I bought uncoated

and covered with spit plastic covers from WM. WM carries the stuff but they never seem to have it in stock. I'm not sure why they chose to use cables. It seems the 1/4" rope would work as well. There is no real load on the lines. The rope would be lighter and match the rest of the rig. The old wire did not even appear to be stainless. Not much help here. Frank BTW I have had them off for 6 months and haven't missed them much. Getting pretty fast at flaking the sails without them.

1/4" double braid

I have used 1/4" double braid line and spliced a SS thimble into the end instead of using a block. Smaller, lighter, cheaper, self fending when brought forward to the mast, etc.

I have always used

3/8" nylon 3 strand twisted rope and nylon thimbles. As mentioned earlier, there is not much load on the lazy jacks. If I were you, I would either A: replace with same vinyl covered 1/8" or B: replace the whole thing with either 3 strand twisted or double braided nylon. Reason being thats its purely aesthetics. To me, looks do count. Tony B
