Replacing key start with push button

Hi - I've posted about this before.

I'm always worried that someone could kick the engine start key on my
Vega and shear it off.

So - a push button start to replace the key start.

I've bought a momentary (non-latching)
weather-proof push button that makes (closes) the starter relay
circuit and breaks (opens) the field line for the regulator when
pressed (the latter for easier cold starting).

So far so good. But the key has 3 positions (OFF/ON/START) and reverts
to ON after engine fires. And of course is switched to OFF once
engine is stopped.

Do I need an OFF toggle switch - to depower the starting circuit so
that the red charging light doesnt stay on all the time (and burn out
the bulb) when engine isnt running?

Thanks

It would be easier to relocate the key switch inside the galley to a safe place and you could still put your push button start switch in parallel in the cockpit for convenience and safety of your key. It would not be a good idea to leave the ignition switch 'on' all the time.

Hi John & Carol

your idea of re-locating key-switch below decks is a good one.

I suppose that all I need is a toggle switch (or original key switch)
below decks and the push button switch in cockpit.

I do like to be able to start the engine *now* though.

I suppose that a toggle switch on the inner/forward side of the bulkhead
port or stbd of the companionway would be a reasonable compromise.

Just "reach around the corner"..

Thanks for helping me to think it through.

All the best,

John

I am not to familiar with the wiring yet, but I did notice on my boat (1813), that the electric fuel pump needs the key to be in the on position to operate. If I turn the key off, the engine still runs but only the mechanical pump in the engine is running.

Hi Roy
I dont have an electric fuel pump - my fuel tank is in port cockpit
locker so gravity (and mechanical fuel pump at fine filter) do the work.

Thanks

John

Hi John. Careful about turning the starting circuit off. You may also be
turning the battery charging off. Walt
