Theoretically it can be done, not sure I would want to. First challenge is to get the shaft loose and slid back enough to slide off the stuffing box and hose. Once the shaft is slid back you will want the stuffing box locknut loose and then the packing box loose so that it slides easily. But leave it connected to the hose. Disconnect the hose only at the back, at the stern tube. Might take some twisting to break it loose after the clamps are removed. Then have rags ready to stuff into the space around the shaft and into the stern tube. Lots of water will get in but the bilge pump should have no problem handling it. It will take a little time to get the new hose back there and the stuffing box back onto the shaft. Yeah, I could do that.
