I recently purchased a 1981 Hunter 30 that needs the halyards replaced. The boat is in the water with the mast up. The halyards are run through the mast and come out the bottom, run aft. The halyards are rope. Does anyone have a secret on how to install new halyards while the mast is up?

Here's how

1. Make sure both ends are squared up well. 2. Sew them together using fishing line. 3. Sew in a criss-cross manner. 4. Flex them to see how they'll go over sheaves. 5. Pull slowly when they get to the top. 6. Do not use duct tape.

Probably easier up than down.

Tom: It is probably easier to do with the mast up than with it down. We have used this method several times and have recommended it to others with great success. Take a look at this link on the photo forum. http://www.sailboatowners.com/upload/display.tpl?folder=Dion73112378230&fno=17

I vote for the paper clip method

I used it on my 23.5 and had NO troubles.

Kelum? grips

I suggest you use Kellum grips. They are made of a wire mesh and grip the outside of electrical cables, once installed they are as strong as the rope you just need to use two and join them together with a small shackle in the center. Any electrical wholesaler will sell them to you and they are very inexpensive.

Paper clip question

Why ruin the line by cutting off the shackle? Wouldn't it be better to 1.attach a messenger line to the bitter end of the halyard (useing a paper clip) 2. When messenger line is run, detach old halyard adn re-attach new halyard. 3. Pull back thru, and detach messenger 4. Use old halyard with shackle for other less crucial situation.

i'm a tad dense

but if you attach shackle-end to shackle-end won't the result be a backward halyard? Shouldn't it be attached bitter-end to shackle-end and pulled through?

Replacing halyards on a stepped mast

Harold Robbins writes: "but if you attach shackle-end to shackle-end won't the result be a backward halyard? Shouldn't it be attached bitter-end to shackle-end and pulled through?" Response: Yes, that is correct. It is also why the shackle must be removed from the existing halyard; else when the line is pulled through, the shackle on the existing halyard wll not come around the masthead sheave. To preserve a spliced shackle on the existing halyard, attach a messenger to its bitter end; pull the messenger through; detach the messenger from the existing halyard; attach the bitter end of the new halyard to the messenger; the messenger pulls the new halyard through the masthead sheave.

I thought that is why we are replacing the....

I thought that is why we are replacing the halyards. If the lines where good we would not be going through this exercise. One option is to cut the shackles off and have the vendor splice them on to the new lines. Running a messanger lines is just another chance for something else to go wrong in my opinion.
