It looks like I need a new freshwater pump on my 2GMF. The signs are there, tearing up belts and the pump pulley wobbles like crazy. Has anyone done the job on their own? How much did it cost if you had it done? BTW, This not the raw water pump which is 1 year old and functioning well.

Sounds like something else is going on with the pump. As they age, I would expect only the mechanical seal to fail.

First step is to find out why the pulley wobbles. Maybe prying against it. This is what's chewing up the belt.

Once that's solved, the next step is to remove the old pump and install a new one. You can do it yourself quite easily. Get the Yanmar shop manual or a copy of the SELOC manual for a fraction of what it would cost to have it installed. I would guess the pump is in the neighbourhood of $250.00. Maybe someone has actually purchased one recently and can give an actual figure.

Closely check the water pump pulley. it may be starting to crack.

the 4 bolts to the pump on mine tore right through the web of my pulley leaving the 4 bolt heads attached to the water pump and the pulley with the new hole loose under the engine.

I am guessing that you are saying it's not the raw water pump and
really the internal engine fresh water system pump.
Right you did say not the raw water pump,I have never had to change the fresh water pump but some one here maybe has changed one.

I second Rich's comment.. It would be strange to have a pump failure without spraying coolant all over! Loosen the belt and try to wobble the shaft.. IF the shaft wobbles, a new pump will be required:

If only the pulley wobbles, check the mounting holes for cracks .. you may be able to simply tighten it.. or if you need a new pulley, it is :

Sounds like the pulley itself may have become loose or damaged, I don't think you could miss coolant leaking and the noise that chewed up bearings make.

The noise was noticeable and grew on a 7 hour motor. Coolant is low in the resevoir tank but no evidence of coolant below the engine. Checked pulley and looks ok but wobbles a lot under load with some noise and starts grinding the belt. Tried tightening bolts- no luck. I am having the local diesel guy come this week to replace it. Too critical of an item for me to screw up installing. Engine has not been overheating but then again I haven't run the engine since the problem started.

Thanks for the help

Follow up. It turned out to be the freshwater pump. Had it replaced and the engine works well again. Still waiting on the bill.
