Replacing Fresh Water System Pump

Has anyone replced the fresh water system pump. What brand did you use or would you recommend? I'm willing to spend whatever it takes to have a reliable sytem that will last more than a few months of relatively heavy use. By heavy I mean 2 persons living aboard and taking most daily showers aboard and not conserving water. Unfortunately it seems as if I'm slowly replacing all the small components of most of the ship board systems we have on our new 450. The fresh water pump we currently have is a Jabsco Parmax 2.8GPM pump. It is acting as if the pressure switch is beginning to fail. When we open a tap it takes anywhere from 1 to 15 seconds before the pump starts and while it may not seem like much it does get very frustrating. When we first moved aboard it was easy to keep a constant flow in the shower, but now it cycles very slowly and the water actually stops flowing before the pump catches up with the demand. I also want to try and quiet the pump. It's a bit loud and not well located. Has anyone relocated their pump? What have you done to help reduce the noise? Help. Thanks, Mike Pilolla

water system

To both quiet the system and give smooth water flow, you can add an accumulator after the pump output fitting. They are available in all the catalogs. For a boat your size, your current pump seems slightly undersized. Check the same catalogs and get a higher capacity pump. Make sure that it's installed properly using vibration absorbing rubber foot mounts. They're like the rubber motor mounts on your engine. This should solve your problems.

water pumps

If I were a live aboard I would have dock side water hook up and not use the 12 volt water pump except when out on the water. You still have a problem because your is not working corrwctly have you checked the water stranier to see that it is not restricted? You don't have to get a new pump they can be rebuilt if the motor is good, for about 25%of a new one Good Luck!

New pump

I bought a new 450 in 1999 and imedialy found the pump,2.8.GPM inferior just by the rating[3 outlets]I doubt I did the right thing by installing a Paragon pump that pumps 17 GPM. It has 3/4 in outlets and Hunter has maybe 1/2"lines.We live aboard and with a washer and dryer and two showers it does the job,but is noisey as hell. But we only use it in the winter when we have to fill up the tanks every week.By the way it was one grand and a job with an expansion tank and adapting the hoses. On my 38ft trawler I had a old fashion[still available]large belt driven pump that was a heck of a lot quiter, but always had to be fixed and we had no washer and dryer. My opionon is to take two 2.8 GPM pumps and seperate the system. But why dont the guys that get the big bucks and have pencils and erases do this $300.000 Beans should take us a little bit further into yachting.$300,000 is the total with all the shit I had to do to make this boat what I needed and I could some one to show me how to clean the ceilings[EDDIE]I am going to stop before I ruin my day. Water Pump Fix

If you don't have an accumulator, then you need to install one, the large one from West will do. Then replace the pump with a larger flow pump of the same brand. This way, it will fit in the space and be easy to install. I went through the same thing and now we have plenty of water flow for not a lot of money or work. We never hook up directly to the dock water line. Too afraid of having a senior moment and forgetting to shut if off, then having the boat sink at the dock.

Thanks For The Feedback

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. I just replaced the water pump with a larger, 3.8GPM and added a stainless, 2 gal accumulator. Getting into the space under the starboard settee was a challenge, but thanks to Gordon Myers on board UtopiaIII for the helpful hints on how to get around the access problem. I'm now able to get to the entire area under the center section any time I need to. Anyway, we have great water flow now and I took the opportunity to mount a thick piece of high density foam between the pump and it's mounting board. Much quieter now when the pump runs. Thanks again to everyone. Mike P. s/v Carolina
