I have some very funky Styrofoam floatation under the cockpit that I would like to replace. I dropped a brass nut down there and had to go digging for it and that's when I found out how flaky the floatation is. It is held in place by what looks like two fiberglass strips that have become loose from their mounts. When I pulled the strips off the foam came out in pieces. My question is this: would it be okay to get some of that blue Styrofoam from Home Depot that is used for house insulation and cut it to size? I saw some 4x8'x 2" thick sheets of the stuff at a very reasonable price. Is there anything special about the Styrofoam that is used in the Oday? Has anyone out there done this and if so then how did you secure the foam? This is my first fiberglass boat and I would just as soon not sink if the opportunity arises. My first boat was a gaff rigged 40' Chesapeake dead rise and it did not have auxiliary power so I never really worried about sinking. Thanks very much for any information.
