Replacing control cables.

My throttle is very stiff. So much so that after 30 years, the stainless machine screw that secured the lever to the shaft in the pedestal sheared off.
I am going to replace the cable, and while I am I will replace the shifter cable as well. Any words of wisdom? I am planning on attaching messenger lines so I can pull the new cables through. Folks have suggested I just clean the old ones, but for what they cost, and the slim chance that cleaning is thorough enough, replacement it is.

I am encouraging of seeking new cables. After 30 years, do the OEM ones really owe you anything. THe change may give the boat another 30 years of cable performance.

Ditto new cables. Teleflex brand was the most common used by Hunter. Stiffness could come from various factors; hardened lubricate, cable worn through metal sheath, etc. Did the cleaning and lubricating part to the engine kill cable on our boat, which made no difference in performance. Some day I will replace that darn cable, but until then I'll continue to use my lanyard to kill the engine. On a scale of difficulty, ten being the most difficult, replacing that cable is close to a 12 or more. The hardest part is the cable connection to the engine.

I replaced both cables on a 1994 33.5. Had to take out steering chain to get cables in and replaced that as well. Major job with a rigger and I both on it. Throttle response excellent with new cable

Ouch! The manual makes it sound so easy! I'll find out soon enough

Just replaced both control cables. Used new cuss words I had never heard of before. Loosened steering quadrant and pedestal to make linkage fit in. Works perfect now.

I replaced both cables on our boat a few years ago. One of the cables was secured such that the steering mechanism rubbed against it and had worn it down to the metal.
That said, on the 356 it was a pretty easy job.
