Please offer any wisdom. I need to replace my companionway sliding hatch. I have looked around, and there are no hatches available in the salvage yards. I have the tools and skills to build one, but I would need a template. My old hatch was destroyed in a storm, and thus I cannot use that as the template. Anyy links to instructions or any knowledge shared would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

If your handy with tools, now would be a good time to build a wood framed, plexiglass topped sliding hatch...

If your rails are still in place and in good shape, you already have length and width measurements...getting a fix on the slider tab should be no problem and set the height to what looks good to you...

Then finish it in matching glass...or if your woodwork is tight, a nice varnish finish to set it off...

Thanks. The rails are in place. What are the benefits of a plexiglass hatch to wood?

One option you might consider when making the hatch is to make 2 sets, one with the Pllexiglass center for when you leave the boat and one with a screen center for when you are on the boat, this would allow you to put the cover on but keep the bugs out.

If your hatch opening is angled like mine, use carboard to create a pattern of the entrance, then decide how many panels you need, 2-4 is typical, make sure to angle the cut between the panels so the slope is down to the outside to keep rainwater out and have fun.

I would find one to borrow for a day and make a negative mold form it out of rubber latex and cheese cloth. (You only really need the top.) Then cover that with plaster to give support. Then use the rubber negative and start with jell coat then fiberglass and build it form that.
I'm sure you can find a demo on you tube. Its easier than you think to copy one. If you decide to go that way and get stuck PM me and I will walk you through it.
