While being towed, the port bow cleat was ripped out of the deck. Is there any literature or information available on how to re-install the cleat so it will have some holding strength?

WHAT BOAT...

Tony? We're not mind readers! All cleats should have a backing plate, but unfortunately not all do, as you must have found out. Bow cleats are not really designed to be towed by either. A bridle between the 2 would have helped, but most would recommend the tow line actually go around base of mast. Knowing what boat will get you more advice as well.

Welcomed Information

After the first cleat went, I thought about what I would do if the second one went and the base of the mast came to mind. Now I know that should have been the first option. As for the cleat's replacement, my Hunter 25.5's deck actually forms a lip (about 1.5 inches wide and 1/2 inch thick) all around the hull and the cleats are attached through that lip with two 1/4 in. threaded bolts. Initially I feared that the cleat was ripped out in tension and had taken part of the deck with it. I would have a really bad repair job ahead. What I found, however, was that the two 1/4 in. threaded bolts were sheared off and the deck holes were undamaged except for some peripheral cracking. Hence the repair is simple, remove the sheared bolts by punching them out and replace with a new cleat and bolts. Live and learn.
