I was wondering if anyone has replaced the chainplates on an older 27. I have a '73 & am thinking getting the kit to replace them. Any thoughts? And any idea on cost (this would of course mean changing standing rigging as well)? Thanks! LaDonna

chain plates

I changed the chain plates for the lower shrouds last year on my 1979 c27. It's a relatively easy job using the parts kit from Catalina. The new plates (bolts really) are much larger than the old ones, but the backing plates supplied by Catalina were kind of puny compared to my old ones, so I just drilled out the old backing plates to accomodate the larger diameter bolt, and I was in business. I don't recall the cost, but I'm sure it was less than $100. No, you shouldn't have to replace the standing rigging if your turnbuckles have enough adjustment left in them, but if you still have the original standing rigging from 1973, I'd say you were overdue for a replacement anyway. I replaced my standing rigging recently, and I am much more confident of the boat in heavy wind. It's expensive, but the peace of mind is worth every penny. I think I paid around $1400, parts and labor included. Best of luck.
