Has anyone replaced a cabin sole, and what type of alternative woods could be used in place of the teak/holly faced plywood. If in a 28.5, even better...does the cabinetry have to be removed?
Replaced my 25.5 this summer. Everything had to go. Took a 1/2 day to take everything out and about a week to put it back.I put a outdoor floor varnish on the teak holly teak so it would not absorb the water again. 4 coats on the bottom / top / sides. Got the wood from Marine lumber supply in Charleston south carolina
at this thread on the Hunter 28.5 site. One of the posters (Jeff, Mystic 28_5) replaced his sole and provides a good description of the process. See link http://www.huntertwentyeightfive.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=102
I replaced mine this spring with simple marine plywood. I used a basic outdoor water proof stain and then 5 coats of Epiphans high gloss epoxy. It turned out great and was easy to work with. The look is wonderful and very natural. I wrestled with if I could get away without doing the teak/holly look and I'm glad I didn't shell out the extra money for it. This worked beautifully.Good luck and don't skimp on coats!
