I recently purchased a neglected 1987 28.5 (been out of H20 for 3 years) and have been doing repairs (which will likely be carried into next year) and have a soft spot in the cabin wood flooring. I noticed this is panelling as opposed to multiple glued pieces and was curious where I can order replacement? ...looks like a holly/cherry combo. I went to Toledo Plywood and Panelling and while they were great for Marine Plywood, had no idea? Home Depot and Lowes...just shrugged shoulders and said Mister we don't do boats. Looking for suggestions. Also, where can I get interior hull fabric/cloth repalcements...mine had some water damage and that "nasty" 3-year wet odor smell so I cut some of it out. A friend suggested a carpet store but all carpet samples had foam or jute backing. Thank you for your help and input! Dan-

rip the rest of the hull liner out

Go back to the carpet store and look at indoor/outdoor carpet. The backing isn't foam or jute and it costs MUCH less than hull liner. Marine hull liner is going to cost anywhere from $11.99 a linear foot on up. We ripped our ratty brown stuff off and are going to replace it with indoor/outdoor carpet this year. I just have to decide if I want to spend .57 or splurge and spend $1.47. I'll be able to do the whole boat, we have a 79 H30, for between $60.00 & $100.00. As for the flooring, you can usually order it from any company that sells speciality hardwood. I found a place near me that had a 4X8 sheet of 1/4 inch teak/holly that could be used for the sole and they wanted $180. I found a place in Canada that the cost of the plywood + shipping costs to the boat yard is equal.

teak and Holey

I replaced the cabin sole in my 28.5 back in 2000....it was quite a bit work as the sink/counter section needs to come out....not too problematic...just took some patience. I suggest that you remove the orignal sections without damaging them as the old sections can be used as templates. I ordered one 4X8-1/2 inch sheet of teak/holly marine plywood from JT's lumber in Bristol, RI. (401 254 0200) Otherwise I noted that World Panel Products 1750, # 1 Australian Ave, Riviera Beach, Florida 33404 Tel: (888)-836-3379, or (561)-840-0500. Fax (561)-840-9945 Also offer similar materials. At that time I also replaced the hull liner. I was able to order material very similar to the original material from the local carpet store. (rated for outdoor use)It took about 2-3 weeks to get it in house. Good luck. Best Regards, Leif Askeland

Tammy & Leif...thanks for the input!

Tammy & Leif..thanks for your input..I'll go back to the carpet store and take another look at the indoor/outdoor. Besides Acetone can you recommend any other solvents to remove the old liner adhesive? Thanks, Dan

Try Hunter Marine for hull liner material.

It was $15.25 per yard at 54" widths. That is $1.13 per square foot, which compares very favorably with the carpet. I've found Hunter Marine prices to be very favorable. If they don't sell it direct, they will often times give you the lead so you can go straight to the manufacturer. Good luck with your project.

removing adhesive

Dan, We used a wire bristle brush to get rid of the foam backing that was stuck on then a palm sander to get rid of the rest of the adhesive. I hadn't thought of acetone, but now that you've mentioned it I think I'll wipe the interior down before putting the new carpeting on. I forget now where I first heard of the idea of indoor/outdoor carpeting. The carpet comes in 12 foot lengths and I estimated that I'd need a 10x12 piece. I am going to ask the store if they will cut the piece into 3x12 foot lengths to save myself from some wicked blisters.

Cabin sole

Dan, This is the company I mentioned in my first mssg. They primarily sell to people who build kayaks & canoes but the material is what you are looking for. I responded to the wrong hull liner query with this info the first time I posted.
