I purchased a new alternator two years ago to replace the stock 55 Amp Motorola. I just wanted the piece of mind of having a ndew one and the added advantage of external regulation as I am using AGM Batteries. I got cold feet about doing the job. The alternator sat in my office for two years. I finally found a highly recomended mechanic to do the job. After not showing up as promised he started on Friday. He immediately noticed that there was no logical way to remove the alternator belt. The flywheel comes right up to the fiberglass llip at the engine compartment door. He returned this morning with his partner and they were going to try and pry the fibergalss away without cracking it to allow the belt to pass. No luck. Since the belt was not in terrible shape I told them to leave the belt and just replace the alternator and the external Balmar Regulator. The alternator I had purchased two years ago came with internal regulation, however the alternator shop modified it for external. I received a phone call a few hours latter telling me the tach is not working and the alternator and regulator are not working. What do I want to do? They offerd to replace the old Motorola 55 Amp. They had suggested earlier to just use the built-in regulator, I then explained that it had been modified to be only external. They then suggested that they bring it to their alternator shop that they use and revert it back to internal regulation. I am sure I am being charged for each hour they spend on the job. I just came home frorm work and they are nowhere to be found and have all of the parts. Is there a protocol here if a mechanic cannot perform the specified job in a reasonable amount of time? Has any other Cat 30 users found the same problem with removing the belt? HELP...

Then something sounds awfully suspicious. They've been making C30s since the mid seventies, so the idea that they couldn't do it is alarming.

If you get your poarts back, the guys on this board and I'd be glad to help you through the process of doing the installation yourself. You'll learn a lot and be a lot safer. Not only out on the water, but with the trolls who pass themselves off as boat mechanics.

We've got wiring diagrams and answers for your electrical questions. Can't help much with "are these guys crooks?" question.
