my depth meter lcd doesn't work any more. the depth meter stills alarms but i don't know to what depth i'm setting the alarm. i want to replace the depth meter. can i use the same transducer? if not can the thru the hull be replaced without pulling the boat? if yes, how? do i have to be real quick? thought i was describing my problem. went to the boat, pulled the meter. it is a "SR Mariner, DDM-I. i will contact them and proceed from there. thanks to all repliers. i have a long way to go to get everything right on "SHANANAGANS" my 1986 Hunter 34

Such as the brand and model of your current depth sounder and if the transducer has a "pin" through it meaning it is of the removable type like a speed transducer. Very few, perhaps less than 5%, of depth transducers are of the "insert" type meaning they are removable. If it's not an "insert" type transducer you will need to replace it out of the water unless of course it is new enough, or the right frequency, to work with a newer display head..

Ramajama, The transducer goes in from the out side
if there is a hole in the bottom of the boat. The old one is probably bedded in something that holds really tight. You must bed the new one to prevent leaks. Generally I would call it a two person job. I think that it would be best if that part of the boat was not in the water.

What makes you think it's the transducer?
Our Datamarine 20 year old LCD started acting up. I removed it and sent it to DMI in Mass and they replaced it and it's working just fine now. Look into it some more. MS is right, what do you have?

Another option
Don't forget that if you have an older boat, and end up replacing the entire unit, it is not necessary to put another hole in the hull. If you boat is not a composite construction, you can epoxy a new transducer inside the hull, thus not making another hole in it, or eliminate an existing one.

I had a problem with my Raymarine depth display. I sent it back to them and they repaired the unit in a few days. I also had a bad transducer so I replaced it with a sounder that has a retractable head. I did this out of the water. I used the retractable transducer because if I ever needed to replace the unit again I woudld be able to do it when the boat was in the water. Today I would go with the transducer inside the hull. Who wants holes in their boat?

Nobody can give you good advise until you fill in the gaps. Your transducer may be the problem or your display may be the problem. Nobody can tell. You will need to identify the manufacturer and get on the phone with their technical service. My display was not functioning but I learned from the Datamarine tech service how to determine that it was the transducer that failed. It was easily replaced because it is an insert type and I didn't have to replace the collar. It was an easy, quick change and I just had to mop up a small amount of water. If you have to replace the whole assembly, you can't do it until your boat is out of the water. In that case, don't bother replacing it, just close the hole. BTW, if the type you have is an insert type, you can save the life of your transducer by inserting the plug that is available before haul-outs. Do this for the speed paddle wheels, too, and avoid the problems you have when the sling causes damage.

open it up and look inside...
take the bulkhead unit apart and see how much water damage is inside, like others have said if the alarm still works, it is probably still good. my old SR mariner was a complete mess of rust and whatever corrosion you could imagine, so taking it apart will tell you a lot more.
