i HAVE A SPRING LOADED OUTBOARD BRACKET WITH ABOUT 14 IN LIFT, RACHETS INTO DIFFERENT HEIGHTS, POSSIBLY A GARLICK. wOULD A 8 HP 4STROKE BE TOO MUCH FOR THIS BRACKET, CONSIDERING 9.9 NISSAN 20 IN SHAFT DID FINE? nISSAN IDLES FINE, BUT IN GEAR AND LOADING UP WITH THROTTLE, IT FALTERS, AND DIES. ANY HELP WITH EITHER ISSUE WOUD BE APPRECIATED

You may want a new bracket
I just replaced my old Johnson 9.9 2-stroke with a new Yamaha 9.9 4-stroke. Most of the older model brackets are very specifically labeled as "Not for 4-stroke." I replaced my bracket with a Garelick 71090 designed for 4-strokes. Even though the new Yamaha is only about 10lbs heavier than the Johnson, apparently 4-strokes make alot more torque and the brackets can't handle it. I don't think the old bracket would have failed, but why chance losing a new engine? The new bracket is much sturdier.

I had noticed that when I tried to lift the motor, the bracket didn't seem to help much (I've owned the boat three years). I recently removed the motor for a tune up, and saw that the springs on the bracket were completely worn out. The suggestion for a new bracket is probably a good one.

Not just a good idea
I would not use a four stroke engine unless it was on a bracket specifically designed to handle the extra torque. I would especially stay away from mounting a new four stroke on an old, tired two stroke bracket. The ability of the bracket to lift the engine is not the main consideration: its how it handles the load generated by the operation that you need to worry about.
