Replacing 26S trailer hubs/bearings

I have a 26S factory trailer and I am fixing it up. I have cut out the old rusted "v" bunks and had new ones welded in. The spring hangers were rusted through and broke off, so I replaced them with spring hangers, and the next job is to replace the hubs and bearings. Having looked through various catalogues, I see that there is a choice between straight and tapered spindles, so my question for anyone who has done this job is ....... Which do I need - straight or tapered?

This is the same as changing wheel bearings in a car. Take it apart and take 1 each wheel bearings races and seals to your local auto parts store. They will match numbers and most likely have everything in stock.

Dear lug nut

Thank you for your reply, and of course I am aware that I could do that. However, I am trying to do it in one operation, Wheel off, hub off, replace bearings and hub, and put wheel back on. The reason for my post was to find out whether it is a tapered or straight spindle, so I can buy the correct replacement hubs and bearings BEFORE I take everything apart. I would probably also not go to an auto parts store to get bearings and hubs for wheels on a trailer that are going to be submerged in sandy, salt water on a regular basis. I would get special bearings sealed against salt water and sand intrustion and galvanized hubs, neither of which are probably available from a regular auto parts store.

Lug nut part 2

It takes about 5 minutes to pull a wheel and put it back on. We've both got more time than that in it already. If it were me I'd just have a look. But that's me. Have you looked at the disc brake kit from BWY? All stainless hubs and rotors bronze pistons etc. Everything to do the job for about $400 Cheers vwj
