I am looking to replace both hatches and the cabin windows in my 1981 27' Hunter. I am having some problems finding a source. Can anyone recommend a good vendor? Thanks

Thriftymariner.com I just bought the same boat 1979. Haven't had time to do anything with it. It's covered with a tarp and snow on cape cod mass. Do you have the yanmar 8 hp. Any +s or -s with it?

Yanmar

John, I do have the Yanmar. I just got the boat last summer. Only problem I had was the injector tube went out (the steel tube that runs from the mechanical pump to the injector). When I bought a new one, it came with a new spacer for the alternator that has two holes tapped into it and a fastener to bolt down the tube as it crosses over the bracket. The old tube did not have this bracket and apparently the tube is subject to vibration problems. I was told the vibration would cause the fitting (where the tube screws into the injector itself) to begin to leak. This is what mine began doing and of course would not start as it was sucking in air. It is an easy fix (and upgrade) and only cost about $15.00. Other than that, I have no problems. It isn't too hard to change the oil and the engine starts perfectly every time and runs well.

Also Pompanette.

Pompanette still produces the Gray portlights. See Related Link(www.pomanette.com). I think your sizes are the same as on my '79 H37C, small are 4x11(5.5x12.5) and the large 6x14(7.6x15.5). The large dimension is the size of the hole and can be verified by measuring the outside edges of the spigot, that frame that people step on and crack! Not sure about the hatches, mine are still good and watertight so never measured.

Ports and hatches

You now have the two best sources for the ports. As to the main cabin windows, they were made by GO Industries in Calif. long out of business but assets taken over by a new vendor. Haven't been able to dig up name but got it from Hunter parts Dept. Be sitting down when you ask price for the four-in the $550 range. AS to the trapizoid hatch, there are many many postings on this in archives.

Ports

I have a 1979 27'Hunter that I replaced all the ports in 2 years ago. The Company is in Corona, CA. He has all the original molds for the fixed ovals and fixed aft. Mark was very helpful..gave me many pointers on how to best replace, being that I had never done this before. The ports matched perfectly with the original cutouts. They look great. I opted for the smoked. You can reach him at (909)735-7705 or fax (909)735-0701. Good luck and fantastic sailing. Randy

Opening ports

Grounds: I assume that your model has all opening ports. The earlier models had some fixed ports and the people in Corona, CA. (Mark Plastics) can make the replacments for those models. The ports that you are probably looking for are available from Bomar (Gray Ports). There is also an outlet in Fl. (The Thrifty Mariner) that handles these from time to time (surplus, seconds, overstock). It is my understanding that the Beckson ports are also a direct replacment for the Bomar/Gray ports. This will give you an option for some price shopping too. If your frames are NOT cracked on the hatches they can be replaced by most any plastics shop. This may be a much cheaper alternative to replacing the entire hatch too.

Becksons

Steve You are absolutely right. The Becksons opening ports are a match. I have 4 opening ports that I replaced with the Becksons. The other 4 ports are fixed. I remember now, the 81 Hunter does have all opening ports. Sorry about that. My mistake... LOL... Have a fantastic sail anyway. Randy

Bomar/Grey/Pompanette

I have had much success in the past with Pompanette, who recently purchased Bomar, who had purchased the old Grey hatches. Go to the website, and/or, give them a call. You might be surprised. My former boat (much loved) was a h27 '82 with Grey's...for what it's worth...

Not ARE they cracked -- WILL they crack

The issue with the really old ports is even if they look OK, they are likely extremely brittle and the first broadside wave will stave them in. I'd be really surprised if any of the old portlights didn't break with very little effort.
