I am looking to replace this winch-that brings up the "centerboard". I think some told me that this was called a brake winch. I have been unable to find local. Anyone have any suggestions..info appreciated

I love this stuff. You can get a replacement winch at northerntool.com Item#129681 About 50 bucks. vwj

They used to use reel winches on halyards

If you check shops that sell used hardware you could perhaps find one.

If you are in salt water

make sure you use a galvanized winch. I replaced the one on my previous 21' boat last year. Most of the online boating sites stock them.

I should have mentioned

that I replaced mine with an ordinary (but galvanized) trailer winch.

Trailer winch

Looks like a boat trailer winch would work and it will be galvanized.

Which winch?

I saw that winch in the Northern Catalog too late. I have a trailer winch I am thinking of installing. My winch does not brake much at all. I have to put my fingers into the back to hold the pawl off the gears so I can lower the keel. Since I find the keel isn't that heavy I don't see why one can't just use a trailer winch rated for more than the keel weight. Lever up for up, lever down for lowering, just need to hold onto the handle to do it as I need to do now and would be prudent in any case. Only change would be it would become a one hand operation. Right now it's an awkward two hand task to lower it. Any good reason this won't be just fine? Am I missing something? The boat is new to me.

Be careful

I sold my Venture 222 with a 470 pound keel to a guy who loosened the brake. The handle slipped out of his hand. He got both forearms badly beaten trying to grab it, sheared the stop bolt and reshaped the hole for the stop bolt. If he hadn't had the stop bolt in he might have broken the hull.

Reinforcement

Re-read and memorize Escanaba's response. Be sure to engage the lock at all time. Do not let women or children near the thing. Just tell them it's man's work, stay back.

Wench

Contact MacGregor yachts in Southern California. They sold a new one with the brake to me for $100 and it never slips. Novelman

The Fulton winches are probably what your original winch was. And IMHO I wouldn't use anything but a brake winch.
