I broke one of the spreaders on my 1978 22 a couple weeks ago (tripped and fell on the mast while working on the boat) so yesterday I called Rudy at the fabled D & R Marine to see if he had a spare. I thought I'd share the info. If you need a replacement, measure your outside diameter before you order since Oday made a number of different types for the 1978 22. Most of the spreaders had round ends, either 7/8" or 1" diameter on the mast end, and were 27" long. A limited number were square on the mast side, and were 26" long. Rudy was helpful and has them in stock. The round-end ones {which I needed) run about $20. Quite reasonable I thought, especially since I was expecting them to be much more expensive. I also asked Rudy about the proper sizing for the side chain stays. I know this has been said before, but some of the original equipment was undersized. Rudy's advice: take a 1/2" wrench and try to put it on the interior nut. If it fits, you are good to go. If it is too big, replace the 7/16 part with a beefier 1/2" part.
