Help! We pulled our 1979 Hunter 33 on Monday to have the bottom painted and have new speed and depth instrumentation and transducers replaced. Husband ordered them from company in CA, company said they would be here today, as boat must be painted and back in water on Monday (boatyard booked solid - we must vacate our space.) Husband not home yet, but called from work wondering if items arrived. Company in CA called right after he hung up - parts on back order, may be WEEKS and WEEKS. Not a problem for installation of inside instruments, but we'll have to haul again with newly painted bottom for transducer replacement. Has anybody out there replaced their speed and depth instruments and might know somewhere on the Gulf Coast these parts could be obtained, so I might have some good news to offer my husband when he gets home, to counteract what will be NOT good news from the CA company? Thanks. Connie

Well Connie..................

Connie: There are many different brands of instruments. We need to know what brand you ordered before anyone can helpya! All the transducers are different!

Well Connie (more)..................

Connie: The only transducer that you need to worry about is the one for the Knot Meter. The depth transducer can be mounted 'Inside' the hull. If you are going with one of the major mfg you may be able to get just a thru hull and a plug locally.

Can Work in Sling

For starters, like Steve said, it would be helpful to know what make and model equipment we're talking about. However, what a person could do, when the stuff shows up, is to haul the boat and drill the hole with the boat still in the sling, if the yard would allow it. Generally the speed transducer is installed slightly forward of the keel, sufficiently far forward so as to miss the strap on subsequent haulouts. You don't want to put pressure on the paddle wheel or can break or bend the little shaft it spins on. Ideally one would want to coat the new hole opening with epoxy to help prevent water infiltration into the fiberglass. If the transducer is to be installed in an old hole, and the hole has to be made larger or smaller, then this presents a more complicated situation and would take longer, more than likely precluding doing it in a sling. The other option is to buy just the thru-hull part with a plug and install those items and wait until the ordered items show up. Unfortunately, the plug and thru-hull parts would probably be a special order since very few people if any would ever buy just these items. A third option, not the best, is to do the work on a tide swing. Forida has very small tides so this probably isn't much of an option.
