build your own rudder
I just helped a friend with a Mac 26 build a rudder this past weekend. He used baltic birch plywood from Home Depot glued up to make the right thickness (1 3/4" ?). We used the technique described here http://www.ne-ts.com/mac/cc/cc-404rudder.html to shape the rudder using a tablesaw with a 1" dado blade. It only took about an hour to shape it(we were being careful). The top was then cut out with a bandsaw. Another hour with a beltsander to "blend" the foil shape to the square top end, and then a skin of glasscloth and epoxy it will be done. I was amazed how easy it was to do. Seems like it would be very strong. Cost was about $28 for wood and $25 for epoxy and cloth. The foil shape was plotted with a computer program, the rudder width was increased by 2" ahead of the centre of rotation to reduce weather helm.good luck, Bob
