About to take ownership of a 1989 Catalina 30. The survey indicated the rudder was delaminated. After doing some research I am down to Foss Foam Products or Catalina. Need some help deciding who to purchase the replacement from. Also, what other parts should I have on hand for this job. Any help would be appreciated.

Check with both

I'd check with both Foss Foam and Catalina for pricing. Al at FF is a great guy; he was a guest moderator on this site some time ago - really knows his stuff. However, a direct replacement from Catalina might be less money. It pays to shop around! Best, Trevor

C30 rudder

I had heard on the C30 (or Catalina) email list (sailnet) that the Catalina rudder is cheaper but of poorer quality than the more expensive Foss rudder. Again, I can recall reading that there. No personal experience. You may want to ask this question on those two email lists. Many C30 owners there (over 400).

delaminated rudder

A delaminated rudder does not necessarily have to be replaced. If it is dry delamination, it can be repaired by drilling holes and injecting resin. Its actually quite an easy repair. If its wet delamination - water penetrated into core, it may still be repairable if the metal web is not badly corroded. To answer that question you have to cut a hole in the skin to get a look at the metal webbing inside. As for replacement - I recently got a very attractive price ($2000) from Foss Foam in Florida for a replacement rudder for a 42 ft Endeavour that I subsequently decided not to buy. Suggest you call them. They are quite friendly.
