Had a great day sailing and my rudder snapped off. Managed to get it repaired by a fibreglass technician but it happened again - any suggestions? should I buy a new one and if so where do I start looking? thks:doh:

If it broke twice, I'd say there was something seriously wrong with it and its time for a new one. Two places to look at:

IdaSailor makes replacement rudders that are supposed to be better than the originals; more efficient shapes, better materials, etc. They are also pricey. Here is the link for their Oday 25 replacement:

Rudy at D&R Marine also makes a direct replacement. Rudy used to work at Oday and is probably using the original mold. His product is also significantly less expensive than Ida's:

Either way, you will need to spend some serious coin. Good luck.

Re: D&R Marine in MA

I replaced mine a few years ago. bought one from Ruddy. Ouch! they,ve gone up a bit. I gotta say I like the looks of the kick up rudder. One problem with the 25 is that while the stub keel might let you get into some shallow places the fact that the rudder runs deeper than the keel might just keep you there. As to the one piece rudder, IF you've got the time and skills you could also consider making your own. Its been done. Look in the archives. ITs gotta be cheaper. I broke mine in the spring and didn't want to miss months of sailing while I got a round to it.

I broke my rudder back in June on an O'day 23.

I have me boat in a lake with a nuclear station. The lake level fluctuations 8 to 10 feet each day.

So I decided to go with an Idasailor kick up rudder. It wasn't cheap!

But, I can say that since June, I've had it kick up at least 2x during sailing. It works great. They were really good at making sure I gave them the correct measurements, etc.

To be honest, that little rudder cost about 1/3 the cost of the whole boat!

Thanks everyone - I've ordered a replacement from D & R - happy sailing
Thanks for letting us know how you decided! It's always nice to know. You might want to take the opportunity to beef up the pintles and gudgeons.
