Hey guys, I'm looking at a h216 hull only on a trailer for about $3000. The guy said the mast and boom were lost while sitting on a mooring in heavy weather but the hull was not damaged, so the boat would need mast, boom standing and running rigging and also sails. I know ,his story sounds a little fishy but thats what I have. Is this a good price considering what I have to replace and any ideas on what it might cost for what I need? I have a Mac 26D and am thinking about moving to a daysailer that would be a little easier to maintain, I have a pontoon boat that we use most of the time and mainly end up sailing only in club races on Sundays. I broke my mast and it was covered by insurance. It was replaced by my local Hunter dealer. It was painful...three masts got shipped and two were munched by the freighters (forklift boo-boo and something else). Took almost a year. My dealer replaced the needed parts and took care of the rigging also. If you got a quote from your local dealer, a rigger and shopped online for sails you could get a pretty good idea of the cost. Check the chainplates, jib mount at the bow (whatever it is called), and the mast foot plate and surrounding areas for damage. Don't forget the H216 has a furling job so you will need a furler also. I agree, the story sounds fishy but what else could have happened?
Thanks for the replys, I think I'm a little hesitant to persue this because it sounds hinkey, to lose the rig and the hull still be "pristine" dosen't seem possible. I've seen a couple demasting events and there was always some hull damage from the rigging pulling lose, I'll have to kick this one around a bit. Thanks, Tom
On another subject , how bad is the cracking of the foam in the hulls of these boats,I have heard they crack real bad, I live in Western Ma. 100 deg. in summer 26 below in winter. Thanks, Tom
No need for an answer, I read Judy's post. I love the looks of this boat, saw one at the Newport Ri. boat show about 7 years ago and can't shake the want, but this cracking thing puts a damper on it. Seems like they'd sell for less with that defect.
Just be sure to add up the total cost of mast, boom, stays and running rigging. You could have more $ in piecing it together than buying a complete 216.
I've never seen a Hunter ACP hull that didn't have at least a few minor cracks. The issue being the grow worse and they are all the way thru not just a gel coat like crack on a fiberglass hull.
