Replacement hatch for Hunter 25

Does anyone out there have anything new to contribute about replacement options for the trapezidal deck hatch on the Hunter 25? I need to replace mine, AGAIN, and would like to avoid putting in another of the flimsy plastic replacements from Bomar/Gray.Last year John Cherubini II posted a promising response to a similar inquiry saying he was interested in manufacturing replacement hatches in fiberglas (like the originals), if someone could lend him an original equipment hatch from which to make a new mold, or else from wood. However, I've seen no further update from him and have been unable to reach him by e-mail.Other earlier posts discussed installing a larger size metal hatch. If you've had success with this approach, which model did you use, and how did you adapt and install it?

Ocean 60

Be brave and pay the 500 bucks for a Lewmar Ocean 60 hatch. I installed one on my H25 six months ago, and am very pleased with it. Yes, it's pricey, but it will last a lifetime & looks very nice on our boats. Installation is as simple & straight-forward as John Bastien's link describes. I have matching Lewmar opening ports on order as we speak, and when I get them installed I'll post pictures. I think new Lewmars all the way around will give my boat a more modern appearance, and will definitely be enduring & practical. Randall

Lewmar Hatch

I saw your hatch post and am interested in your suggestion. If you don't mind me asking, how do I order the appropriate hatch, is it the 60 or do I measure the inside and outside dimensions. I have a hand-made wooden and plexyglass hatch, not bad but it doesn't fit the look of the boat, (Hunter 25, 1976). Your response is greatly appreciated.

24" X 24" (I think)

Dang, I wish I'd read your post before I went to the lake today so I could've confirmed the hatch dimensions! I believe my Ocean 60 hatch is 24" X 24". Be safe, and take a quick measurement of the inside dimensions of your hatch opening. My boat's hatch opening isn't square: the back is about an inch wider than the front, and it has a flat mounting surface about 2" wide all the way around. If your '76 is the same, an Ocean 60 will be supremely easy for you to install. Once installed, about a half an inch of the fiberglass opening will be visible on each side at the front of the hatch (when viewed from the top), and a half an inch of metal hatch frame will be visible from below at the rear.If your boat is the same, order the Ocean 60 with the flat base, which is an outward-turned flange that bolts directly onto that 2" wide surface area. Nothing protrudes downward, so you don't have to modify the hatch opening in any way.
