I recently purchased a 1985 O'Day 222 which included the original jib, in good condition, but no furling system. I have a couple of hank-on foresails, but would really like to install a roller furler. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which brand(s) I could use with the original sail, which type is best, etc.? I also need to replace the main. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Furler for O'Day 222

I also purchased an O'Day 222 last fall and it lacked the jib roller furler. (I thought the R.F. was supposed to be "standard" equip. and concluded that over the years the original R.F. was canabalized. Apparantely mine's not the only one sans R.F.) Anyway, I bought the Hood "Seafurl" system and installed it, but if I had it to do over again, I would use the CDI system. (I had CDI on a previous boat, but I wanted to try something different this time.) Hood has the posibility of halyard wrap problem if the head of the jib ends up too low on the furler. CDI's built-in halyard avoids said situation. I also believe that I could have had the new jib built with a longer luff if I used CDI. (With Hood the largest Genoa turned out to be 145%.) With the Genoa tracks mounted on the 222's coach roof, sheeting lead angles and clew height must be measured accurately. My new jib is a Neil Pryde - fits perfectly and has beautiful shape. The Hood foil is a #5; I think that the CDI is a #6. The numbers do not affect sail performance; just be sure to use the correct bolt rope. If you go with CDI, for easiest operation be sure to buy the ball bearing version. I've always wondered what happened to the original R.F?

Feedback to your Ques....

Hi...... I changed my hank-on to a CDI furler - it works great. Expect to have the sail modified to use on whatever furler you use.. Mainsail.... I bought a new UK main ("BatMain") w/two sets of reef points & fully battened - I really like it! I can tell you my adventure on purchasing a mainsail was a hassle (you don't get much attention with a small sail purchase from most lofts) BUT the guy at UK in Clearwater was very helpful.. I don't have the exact cost with me at work but I want to say around $2K.. Let me know if I can help in any way.. Have fun! Doug

CDI FF2

I bought the CDI FF2 a couple of years ago and it works flawlessly. There is no need to get the ball-bearing add-on however. It rolls up easily even under load without it. I didn't bother with the old sail. Rather, I just had a local sailmaker make me a 135. Overall, I have no regrets. I have a friend who has had his CDI FF4(he admits its a bit of overkill on the size) on his Precision 23 (again without ball bearings), and it has worked like a charm for 10 seasons. Just my 2 cents. Thanks

Thanks for the input, folks. I'll probably go with the FF2. Does anyone else have experience with the non-ball bearing version?
