The diesel for the h27 I bought is in pie especially, and the seller presumed it had had a blown head gasket.

Attempt to repair? Or replace? If replace what make and model would be best?

do you have mechanical skills if so get the manual and give it a go or find someone that can give you a hand and try to fix it

Repair is drastically easier and cheaper. Head gasket not that big a deal if you're handy.
If replace, Beta 16 has good power and torque, fuel sipping, small, smooth running, easy maint. Perfect motor for your boat size.

I second Skippers recommendation for a Beta, good suport, good engine! But if the hours on the original engine aren't to high it will be much more cost effective if you do a minor rebuild. what make and model is the original engine?

Dana,
I replaced the original Yanmar YSM12 on my 1979 Hunter 30 this year. The Yanmar ran fine but I was looking for easier maintenance, more power and smoother running. I chose a Nanni 3.21 which is based on a Kubota diesel as are many of the Beta's and Universals. I found the price to be significantly less and Nanni has an been excellent to deal with. It may be worth checking out Nanni if your decision comes to replacing.
Cheers,
Bob

Wow. That's a nice looking motor. But it looks quite a bit bigger than the Yanmar in the H27, although I could be mistaken. Is this the right motor shown in this video?

Dana,
The motor in the video is the one I put in my 1979 H30 and suits it very well. It is worth noting that Nanni makes comparable sizes to the Beta's and Universals using the same Kubota engines they do. I also agree a 16 hp twin cylinder sounds like a good motor to consider for your application.
I have dealt with Hugo Stamp (The authorized Nanni dealer in Florida) and have nothing but praise for them. Price and service has been outstanding.
Regards,
Bob

Or pull the diesel out and go 4-stroke outboard power. Think of all the room for beer and ice!
