Replacement Diesel for 5411

I just purchased a Catalina 27 with a frozen Universal model 5411. Engine is salt water cooled and has sat for three years without running. The experts tell me its cheaper to replace it with a Westerbeke 20b two then to try to rebuild it. Does this sound right? If anyone has any experience replacing engines they would like to share or any other advise to pass along I would appereciate it. New at this and getting in over my head before I even leave the slip. Thanks

Outboard

Check the Catalina archives. There are a number of posts on this topic. Personally, I'd yank out the inboard and replace it with an outboard. It's much cheaper, you'll sail faster, and you'll end up with a ton of storage.

Four Stroke

I aggree with Bob. I would highly reccommend a four stroke. I presently have a 15 HP Four Stroke and am very satisfied with preformance. The best part is it is a LOT cheaper and storage space makes a great beer fridge.

Replacement Diesel

I have priced rebuild vs. new for Columbia 9.6 that has been sitting for about 10 years. Rebuilding engine (Yanmar) and transmission is about $4500. Junking old engine and transmission and replacing with new is about $8500. These prices do not include labor and labor is more expensive for new than the rebuild.

Rebuilding the 5411

Steve; You're always better off rebuilding the one you have rather than installing a different brand of engine. The engine beds already fit, likewise the fuel lines, water hoses, exhaust, etc. Try to find a rebuilder near you who has rebuilt 5411s for sale. You can get a price break if you give him your old one, sort of like a "core" charge. The 5411 is not hard to remove/install, and if your at all handy you can do it yourself. You will still have the safety, reliabilty and fuel economy of a diesel if you stay with the 5411, which is a sweet little engine. (I had one for five years in my previous boat, a C-30) Good luck, and keep us posted.Larry W.
