Replacement companionway hatch for H26

My companionway hatch is cracked. Not to the point of leaking but it is cracked. Also, the slider leaks and does not slide very well.

Has anyone priced a replacement? Or found a retro-fit? Or just a bit of old plywood wrapped in a trash bag to work?

Seriously, the design was bad and has become worse over the years, any thoughts>?

You might want to look at the Zarcor Hatchway doors. We had one installed on our 33 and absolutely loved it. Much more convenient! I think they make them for the 26.

Easy fix for slider

The Plexiglas sliding cover does not slide well because it has the full weight of the white fiberglass cover on it. You need to add some rubber feet on the bottom of the fiberglass hood to lift it just slightly and take the weight off. I was really unhappy until I added the feet and now it slides like it’s supposed to. It has been my experience that the slider doesn't leak, it's the hatch boards that do.

Plexiglas Sheet can be drilled to fit

The hatch can be easily fabricated with tinted plexiglass sheet of the right thickness. You will need to re-drill and transfer all of the teak trim and hardware. Use the original as a template and make sure you countersink the holes.

Get someone to help you, because it is very heavy and unwieldy.

The rubber bumpers do wear out with time, so replacement parts are needed. Lastly, the plexiglass can sag over time (mine did after 15 years) and you should never step on it. Original design had a "No Step" decal on it.

Lastly, keep the slides clean and waxed, which will also assist with reducing the friction.

A lot of guys have purchased a Companionway cover on this site and have had good results with this preventing leaks.

Yep, installed mine last weekend. Now I am waiting for it to rain to test out my work.

put a life jacket or throwable cushion underneath the companione way cover folks.

listen to the proposal of the rudder feet.
