Replaced Countertop & Galley Bulkhead

I just finished tearing out and replacing the the galley's rotted out counter top and bulkhead on my 1983 Hunter 31.

That aft starboard corner has always been a collection point for water splashing over from the sink and rain from the open porthole above.

I've posted a photographic journal of this project in case any fellow owners are contemplating such a task.

I like to see these kinds of projects. It makes me want to get going with one of my own little repair jobs. Thanks for the story. It seem like the old 31's get a lot of attention with major upgrades. If I could have only gotten rid of the smell in my old 31, I would have kept her! Great first boat but the inside smelled like dead horseshoe crabs when it was hot! I tried everything under the sun. Even the Head Misdress's brew could not kill the beast. Termits? I will need to check my 336 this weekend.

Termites came from another boat

I'm fairly certain the termites came from a nearby float wreck that was infested with them.

Some guy - whom I only saw once during the six months his floating wreck was anchored about 30 feet from me - threw a fresh coat of white paint over a mostly rotted hull. I was always surprised to see it still afloat.

About two or three months after he'd anchored near me, I began noticing termite activity on my boat. I wasn't aware termites could travel that distance over water, but I guess they can fly.

Finally, the authorities came and towed it away, citing it as a hazard to navigation. However, not before some of its little inhabitants had already escaped to my boat.
