I own a 87 272 and thinking about replacing the midship cabintop window with a hatch, and cockpit window with a vent window. Has anyone done this and if so how did it work out.

Window pains!
I am in the process of replacing my windows. I got new ones from Oday for approximately $300. My old ones are disintegrating as I take them off because they are old and brittle. The adhesive behind them is still very strong. You also have to black out the inner side of the new windows so you can't see the fiberglass through them. (You have to mask over the actual viewable port area) For the cabin top window, I have also re-bedded it. No big problem there, just dig out the old sealant. A piece of Lexan from any home center should work fine, measure and cut to fit. As far as the one in the cockpit, I wouldn't be too gung-ho about it. I know the odds of ever getting that much water in there are slim, but better safe than sorry.

Mark, I tried to remove the port and starboard cabin lights on my '86 272 last spring. I had planned to remove them and cut in oval operable lights in the aft window spaces for ventilation. I removed all the inner trim from the starboard unit and ... gave up. You've answered one of my questions about the what holds the units in place. I didn't realize that there was an adhesive bond. I thought that there was only a gasket between the lexan and the gelcoat which was held in place with screws (that need frequent tightening). Was it necessary to destroy the lexan and the gasket to get the old units out? Any tips on how to do it without wrecking the lexan would be appreciated. By the way, after I decided against tearing the lexan off, I taped the windows off with masking tape, traced the oval units onto the tape, drilled some pilot holes, and verrrrry carefully cut the holes in the lexan to the size of the operable oval units with a sabre saw. We get nice cross ventilation now with one unit above the galley and the other next to the area just forward of the chart table. I was considering installing a solar vent in the midship skylight. Thought that would keep the cabin area from getting too stuffy when I'm not around to open the boat up. Tom

272 Windows question
While sweeping the snow off my newly acquired '86 272, I'm planning ahead to replace a window. The original split dead center, apparently from contraction. What adhesive does one use to avoid that? I understand that some adhesives are not compatible with plexi. The previous owner provided the window, but what is the source for other OEM O'Day parts?

Tom, Sorry about the delay! For the skylight, we have already put a solar vent in ours. Works like a champ, and was easy to do. No interference with hatch or boom vang so far. I'm not sure if my windows cracked because of their age (they were severly sun damaged, to the point of being opaque) or the quality of the adhesive. I think if you could get a small screwdriver through, maybe you could use a piece of wire as a saw to cut the adhesive out. It would be a two person job, though. I have installed three of my new windows (two front, one back). It takes a couple hours per window. -Mark

The LE has a screened port over aft berth ...
so that's not really a problem ... i replaced the companionway window with Lexan and was dumb enough to peal the black backing off before i put the window in ... There is a lexan product that has a backing that you scribe and peal off ONCE the window is in place. this hides the rough stuff. i think that's what they did originally ... don't know what that backer is. The reason I replaced the window was that I moved the instruments so I could see them through the window. but the lexan was too dark so I had to replace the dark lexan with lighter stuff. Seeing the guages is a problem with the LE model because when you are standing at the wheel ... the water/oil dials etc are in back of your feet. And I added a tach as well. don't like to run a diesel without a tach.
