My Hood SeaFurl 705 LD roller furling lost half of the upper bearing on the top most extrusion. The bearing comes in two halves that surround the forestay and align/center the extrusion to the cable. The furling is on my Hunter 28. Has anymore replace this bearing? I'm in the yard and would prefer to change it out by removing the furling on deck from the forestay and lowering the estrustion in order to replace the bearing. The other (less preferred) way is to go aloft and wrestle with it up there. How difficult is it to remove the Hood furling from the forestay and lower the extrusions. Any tech procedures out there? This appears to be a simple remove and replace job - but then again...

Hood Furler Repair

I would think that this task could be done by simply disconnecting the lower drum/forestay, removing the upper swivel and replacing it with a new one. Be sure to connect your jib halyard to the a strong point on deck to support the mast while doing this. But prior to undertaking this job, I'd drop a note to Hood and ask their opinion and the best way to do it. Here is their contact info: (813)885-5793 or email: hoodyachtsystems@Pompanette.com or see url below

Not so easy

Having done this before I can tell you that it will be easier to go up the mast or have the yard do it. You would have to rig a temporary forestay, unshackle the forestay, remove the extrusion sections, drill out the hammer rivets that connect them, and reassemble the whole unit when done with new rivets. The bearing halves are available from Hood at www.pompanette.com
