Replace the Vanity with What?

I'm thinking about getting rid of the vanity on the port side of my H37-C. Considering there is ample room in the head to add a fold-down or slide-out sink (saw Ferenc Mate's "The Finely Fitted Yacht" for a couple ideas), the galley sink is close enough for non-head washing up activities, and the prospect of eliminating the need for all that extra plumbing, it just seems like a no-brainer.

I was originally thinking about installing a workbench and tool chest area, while my wife (oops, keep on forgetting - my ex-wife as of 2 weeks ago!) suggested, since I plan to live on the boat, more cabinet and drawer storage might be in order.

Anyone here have any ideas?

One of the best features of the boat. Cannot imagine being without it. Are you thinking you will eliminate the shower to add a sink?

Just remember if/when you decide to sell the boat, the prospective buyer/s may not think the way you are.

Eliminate the shower - no way! That's one of my favorite features!

A "folding" sink hangs down over the head (open) so you can wash your hands, shave or whatever, and folds up against the cabinet (closed) so you can use the head. Makes a lot of sense to me!

if anybody has easy access (already on your computer) pic's of the 37's "vanity" i wouldn't mind a look to see how it compares to the 33, ours was part of the lower mold and all fiberglass, are you thinking of cutting this out?

If it folds down over the head I guess you could let it drain there. Then use that to flush? Why do you think you need a workshop inside the boat? I would want to keep the mess outside as much as possible.

The H37C vanity is like the H33, it is molded as part of the inner liner. My sink got kind of grungy so I replaced it(pictures). Years later one of our members here found an epoxy paint that would have been much easier and cheaper. And I did like the original. One more example of not taking one's time and getting to the right solution.

I should clarify that removing the vanity is by no means a "done deal", just one of many thoughts. And if it does come to pass, it certainly won't happen anytime soon!

It's just that the vanity seems to me to be a real waste of precious space, especially on a liveaboard. So, I guess what I'm asking is - if a functional sink could be installed in the head, what could I put in the vanity's space that would make more sense?

I guess the vanity's utility depends on the situation. The head arrangement in the Hunter 37C was one of the deal clinchers for us. For our family of four, the vanity worked really well; one member could be in the head and we could still have the kids brushing their teeth, getting ready for bed, etc. It still seems a good arrangement, even now, with the kids grown up. The female crewmembers seem to appreciate the large sink and big mirror. I have to admit its better for shaving too.

However, the shelves below the vanity are where I store all my engine and rigging spares in labelled Tupperware containers - sort of my bo's'n's locker. The large locker cover under the V-berth has a small vice permanently bolted to its underside. When I need a workbench, I flip the V-berth cushions to the sides and reverse the locker cover and ...voila, my "workbench".

Keep it, but put a valve on the drain if you want to retain your sanity !

I'm still not sold on the value of the vanity, but all of your comments call for a re-think. So I guess I'll put the replacement idea on the back burner - it's not like I don't have any other things to do on the boat!

Thanks for the eye-opening responses!
