Replace or repair hose?

Found a chafed spot (about the size of a nickel) on the water hose between the water pump and the heat exchanger. Was going to replace the hose but it is not leaking... just worn. Would you replace or just wrap the worn spot with some type of tape to keep it from wearing on through the wall of the hose?

Thanks.

My subjective opinion - it's a small hose which serves a crucial purpose and you can't tell by visual appearance how weakened it is.

Why would you take the chance?

I agree

Certainly the answer I expected. Since I don't know what size and length the hose is... The lazy in me wanted to buy a roll of "fix-it" tape on the way to the boat today.

Thanks.

Lazy?

Yup, lazy is always a good way to have your engine turn into toast. :)

While you're at it, don't neglect the hoses to the water heater.

You thought i was going to say fun didn't you? Well it is fun but I'm starting to think you guys are enjoying working me to death. Everytime I post something yall add new tasks to my list. I am a fat, bald, tired old redneck and I bought a sailboat to sit under the bimini and ponder things. Guess this weekend I will ponder replacing all the hoses as Stu and the gang suggest...

As always... thanks for the comments!

I just replaced the hose from the Strainer to the water pump as there was chafe, I am going to put a sacrificial piece of hose around the area where it might chafe. That is also zip tying it in place.

Sailfysh,

My boat is only 2 years older than yours. When I did a full inspection of the hoses in 2011 I found numerous weak spots. Plus many of the hose clamps were rusted and a couple even fell apart in hands.

IIRC there are only two different size hoses on the C310, 3/4" and 5/8". I just ordered 15 feet of one and 30 feet of the other (the longer hose for which size goes to the water heater). I also ordered a bunch of AWAB hose clamps. Any below the waterline hoses got the AWAB hose clamps.

I hate to be the one to break it to you but you bought a boat right at the sweat spot of maintenance. Most likely the previous owner didn't do a lot of preventative maintenance because he had a new boat. That means you most likely inherited a boat with a maintenance deficit. Guess who gets to fill it?

Some of the items that come to mind are rebedding all of the deck hardware, new stuffing box hose, new cutlass bearing, new motor mounts, dampener plate, all new hoses, new batteries which will likely include a charger upgrade, new running rigging, complete bottom job, heat exchanger cleaning and pressure testing, new exhaust elbow, recharging the coolant in the refer, flushing and replacing the coolant for the engine, complete rebuild of the head, replacing the macerator pump, most likely all pumps for that matter. How did I put this list together so quick? Guess who did the same thing when I purchased a new to me boat?

The good thing is you bought a boat with a very active owner's group. We've all been there and posted about it here. I also have a lot of post on my blog. Do you get Mainsheet Magazine yet?

Don't hesitate to ask questions here. You will get a lot of knowledgeable responses.

Good luck and fair winds,

Jesse

Jesse,

Thanks for the list... it gives me something to think about when I am sitting under the bimini watching the sunset. Just kidding, I think I had a fair idea of what it was going to be like and I do enjoy "some" of the maintenance... thanks for all the help.
