Our main halyard rope line on our 1977 boat needs to be replaced. I read other forums they helped but can anyone please advise on a step by step proceedure on how to replace the line without having to send someone up the mast? Or send me a link to where we can find a how to manual?
Thanks

You can sew the ends of the lines together and pull easy. But i will suggest that if you don't have a ball bearing sheave at the top, you are missing out. That will require someone going to the top. I have a mast-mate to climb up. It takes about 30 seconds to get to the top. Every marina has someone who likes getting up there. You can always persuade them with some adult type beveages.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
Sew the two ends of the line together. I also put a little tape on them to (electrical tape). Gingerly pull them through.

you didn't mention if you have all rope or rope/wire. if the former, you could assume that the PO replaced the original sheaves with ones that accommodate rope. if the latter, that opens a whole new set of problems. if you are going to replace rope/wire with all rope, the sheaves need to be changed. if you're going to replace rope/wire with rope wire, you would have to join the wire end of the new halyard to the rope end of the old before you put a thimble on the end.

Mayerdav...since it is all rope, sewing the two together is the easiest. Are your halyards external or internal? I will 2nd springing the $$ on two Garhauer ball bearing sheaves and going internal on the halyards...for all intent and purposes, this will require you dropping the mast, however.

If your existing sheave will handle it, I'd also recommend moving up to 7/16" line...a little less stretch for not much money, unless you have the $$ to spend on high-tech cores. I went with 7/16" Sta-Set with the Garhauer sheaves..still at 3/8" for the jib & spin halyards though...would like 7/16" on the jib some day too.
