Sew the ends

While I haven't done it, If I did I'd sew the ends of the old and new lines together and pull the new through with the old. Not sure if you'll get any other ideas but I'm sure there's more than one way of doing it. Good luck.

I did this just a few months ago

and had a hard time too... I have the US Spar instead of the more popular Charleston Spar. here is the final post I had after a lot of help from everyone:

http://forums.beneteau.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=93292&highlight=gaute+drum+furling

Its not impossible and it makes me feel better I'm able to do this and understand how that thing works.

let me know if you have US Spar, I definately have some tips but I think I got them all in the post

Cheers !

If you have a Z Spar (now US Spar) I have some photos that might help. I've done mine a couple of times and it's not that bad a job.

It is a fairly simple job. You will need a couple of wrenches, a screwdriver, a pry bar and about an hour and a half (a helper would make it easier).
Remove the bolt that connects the drum to the furling foil. The foil will want to fall (gravity) so you will need to push it up and run a screwdriver across the mast to hold it up. Remove the six bolts that fasten the plates that hold the drum in the mast. When all the bolts are removed, pry the top of the drum out of the mast. Once it is in your hands, clean and lubricate the top and bottom bearings and replace the line.
Replacement is as simple as removal in the opposite direction.

I hope there is another way to do this. I am not looking forward to this procedure on my B321....

not hard at all

Hey cymeyer, On my fulring I just had a bolt to loosen, take the rope out and replace it, VERY easy job complicated by a bolt that froze... I had to take my furler off and drill it out but if I had opened and closed it regularly it would have taken 5 minutes and only need a screwdriver.

I hope there is another way to do this. I am not looking forward to this procedure on my B321....

Re: not hard at all

I just changed my furling line this year. It's not very difficult, the drum basically slides out from the mast. First check to make sure that the chafe guard is not rivoted in, as it was on my zspar mast. If they used rivots, you will have to drill them out as the will impede the drum from tipping out of the mast. Once the chafe guard is removed, make sure you hold up the furling poll inside the mast, you should be able to see where the drum joins to the poll inside the mast - I used a screw driver to hold the poll in place. Then it is just a matter of tipping the drum out and changing the line - really easy.
