I own a 1980 Shoal Draft 27 which all and all is in good shape with lots of new gear. There is one big problem - The Renault engine is dead! I would like comments, suggestions as to what I should do. I ultimately want to sell the boat and move up to a biggetr boat.

Patrick: I think that the H'27 came with an inboard or outboard. I think that I would remove the engine from the boat and put an outboard on it. Make sure that you leave the boat so the next owner can reinstall an inboard if they wish. This boat should move along just as well if not better with a Honda or Yamaha 9.9. You should be able to find a used engine for less than $1000. You will still have a charging system and you can maximize your return. Obviously you could try to pick up a used engine, but by the time you buy the engine and all of the parts plus the cost of installation, you may have more than the boat is worth.

A dead Renault?
Kind of hard to think of. Thats one tough engine. All roller bearings and nothing too hi tech. Fix the engine. Can't cost a thousand dollars.

I would think twice before going to an outboard; the choppyness of the Bay means that you lose thrust right when you need it most (trying to get into a narrow channel with big seas all around). I would get someone to fix the Renault. They are pretty simple and (knock on wood) mine seems pretty robust. Also, its really nice NOT having any gasoline on a sailboat, and how can you beat using only 10 gallons a season? If you do trash it, let me know. I could use a "parts" engine!

Renault - fix it
