The cable on my bow stay is frayed and I want to replace it. Would appreciate some advice on how to replace it. This is the cable at the top of the stay that attaches to the mast.

are you referring to your forestay?.... it goes from your bow fitting up to your mast ?... the best way to get it taken care of is, go to a rigger and have a new one made.... if it is starting to frey, then it is time for a new one.... if it should break while your out sailing, then your mast will fall, and you will have an even bigger problem....

$81 for just the forestay. You will need to determine if you have a Dwyer mast section or Z-spars. The Dwyer should be an oval cross section with stainless steel hinge plate at the base, and external halyards. The Z-Spars should have a flat surface on the aft face of the mast, with a cast aluminum mast base that kinda looks like heat sink fins and deck plate, and internal halyards for the main.
Given that you say the forestay is fraying, I would carefully examine every inch of the rest of the standing rigging. Look for meathooks (stray wire strands) and any rusting, particularly where the fittings are swaged on at the ends, or other obvious cracks. I use Nevr Dull metal polish, as it is impregnated cotton batting. Cleans up the wire, and will snag on any broken strands or particularly rough spots.
