I currently have a 2QM 20 Yanmar in my H 36. Do you know if there is a drop in replacement of three or more cylinders?

2 to 3 Cyl

For what it's worth I dropped a 3GM30F into my Hunter 33 in place of the 2GM. Most critical dimensions are very close, but drilling, among other things was necessary. The major difference is that the 3 is about 6 inches longer than the 2. Otherwise for all intents and purposes they are the same. If you have at least 6 inches clear ahead of your pulley the 3 should drop in. Grab a set of sales specification sheets from your friendly local Yanmar dealer. They show all the critical dimensions. Don't forget the 3 weighs about 50 lbs. more and will affect trim.

Drop in?

Removing the 2QM and going to a G series engine will make a world of difference, even if you stay with two cylinders. The term drop-in is relative to your (or your mechanic's) experience and ability. The engine can be made to fit quite easily and, as I recall the H36, there may be room behind the engine for some of the extra length of the 3GM30F. If you make the change, don't forget the F.

3GM30F

I have just purchased an 81 Hunter 36 that has a 3GM30F in it. It fits well with plenty of space on the starboard side. The only thing that I have noticed is the if you need to do any work on the port side of the engine it can be a little tight. I am very pleased with the performance of the 3GM30F that is in mine. If there is anything you would like for me to check on specificly just let me know. Keith s/v Sterling
