Ok been going over the new boat fixing this and that. I trusted the PO about the spreaders being good to go (the survey did not cover rigging sadly) as he said no rot and he paints them every year. We have only had the boat about two months.

so I climbed up the mast and noticed some rot on the starboard spreader and my finger tips sunk in as I was climbing. It also wobbles a bit. The port one is ok but I would like to replace both as soon as funds come my way. I heard you can replace them without stepping the mast down. Money is tight right now and I would like to repair or replace. Here is the problem though my mast has steps installed and the step cable stays go through the spreaders:cussing:

the wife is mad at me because "the expensive survey did not find this". I explained that we only had the boat survey and not the rigging and engine. So If I can at all postpone stepping the mast until we put the boat on the hard after another year that would be ideal.

My ideas include that WEST epoxy that fits in a caulking gun and some strategic holes drilled/filled.

adding turnbuckles to the ladder rigging so I can remove the spreaders one at a time and replace.

Also I'm running out of time/money this season :D before the boat is on the hard. Can I climb the mast on the Hard? I used to live in Oregon and climbed and mountaineered my whole life ;)

here are some bad iphone photos as I only had one free hand

and you can see the ladder rigging better here

thanks for any help or ideas

I replaced both spreaders ( stbd. & port ) on my Willard 8 T. and fitted them one at a time with slack made in the appropriate shroud to allow required clearance. After the spreaders were installed it was a simple process to retune the rig to it's former state. I worked from a bosun's chair and didn't use the mast steps. I had an acquaintance in Ft. Myers Beach who wrote an article for a local cruising publication entitled 'Stairway To Hell' outlining the risks and dangers of riveted mast steps. Any time you find rot on board, especially in the rig, is the proper time to address it.

Regards, Darrell

There has been sooo much written about the C30...

www.catalinadirect.com

Spreader replacement kits

Good luck.

PS - Can someone direct the OP to a C30 "discussion" group? Please. The C30IA website is kinda quiet and now static.

Dan,
Join the C30 Yahoo group and ask the same question. It's archaic but an active board with some pretty knowledgeable guys. Like Stu said, there has been lots written on this. I'm sure you'll get good advice.

Dan,

I got in this thread a bit late, however I ran across the wood spreader problem shortly after buying my C30 in 1990.

I went to JSI & I gotta say, they fab'd beautiful aluminum spreaders for me.
The nice finish coating is still holding up over after twenty years now.

The spreaders look like airplane wing shaped foils. the end pieces are nicely done & proper weld & thickness. When I ordered mine in '92, the price was outstanding. At that time I believe it was under $200.00. But, that was then & this is now.

Good choice pal.........

Yep - don't over look this! You'll sleep and sail with confidence... Your choice to go aluminum was correct but not too big a deal to make with Sitka spruce.

Along the same lines, I have an early C30 #173. The kit that Catalina Direct sells won't work on my mast. Does anyone know who makes spreaders that will fit in place of the wooden spreaders? I've seen them before...they have a nice airfoil shape, and, as I said, are direct bolt in replacements for the wood spreaders. Cap'n Ron...are these the ones you put on your boat?

yea the price is a bit higher now [a bit over $400 (almost everything is higher now)but I think will be well worth it.

I can't wait to get them though I won't get to install them until next year as the boat is going on the hard in two weeks.
