I just bought an Oday Daysailer. It has the original (1982) sails that are generally in good condition. A few stitches are coming apart, however- particularly around the batton pockets. 1. What material are the sails likely made of? 2. What kind of thread should I use to re-stitch the areas? Thanking you in advance, Len Fisher

Unless you are a perfectionist.....

The sails are more than likely made of Dacron. You should be able to stitch them yourself and save some $. I like to learn to do things myself. Pick up some whipping twine and a needle kit at the West Marine (or equal) and give it a whirl. I have had no lessons or sewing skills and I have sewn tears in sails, canvas, etc., and they have held remarkably well. There's some online instructions by searching "sail repair". Otherwise, if your sailing budget is fatter than mine, take it to a sail maker and they can do a professional job. Good luck.....Gary

Try SailRite in Indiana

Until a few months a go I never tried sewing anything much more than a button repir. Sailrite.com has a great sewing instruction kit that includes a great sewing manual (by hand and machince), sail thread, sail repair material, whipping twine, assorted needles, a sewers palm, and a ditty bag kit that you sew yourself for practice. I've grown from that to: sail repairs, sail covers and most recently recovering V-berth cushions. They even sell kits to make your own sails. Give them a try. If you use a home sewing machine for the repairs, this instruction book will save your day. One last thing, buy sew-ease if you use a home machine. It's a light clear non-staining lubricant that makes all the difference in the world on tough materials to penetrate. Good Luck
