Good eve. Live in southeastern CT. Would like to met other 22 owners nearby.
Anyway, bought my 22 in late Sept. fully aware that it had some topside leaks. Want to start tackling them. A prime suspect is the fiting on top of cabin that holds base of mast. Hope to take pictures as I disect it. Hope to make it leak proof and stronger.
Next suspects are the life line stancions. Any idea of how they come out?

One last thing, anyone ever hear of a hole being drilled into the lower part of the shallow keel to prevent water build up and the freezing?

The mast tabernacle is always a likely suspect. I had a leak in one of the bolts that holds the mast tab on my O'Day 222, and the water was coming through around the bolt threads creating small drips. I used 3-M Adhesive Sealant 4000 UV to re-caulk it. Before you start pulling your lifeline stanchions off, you may want to pull the gunwale strip off and re-caulk that first. None of my lifeline stanchions have leaked so far, but the area under my gunwale strip was leaking like a sieve. You will want to use a polysulfide type caulking on this also if it's an Aluminum gunwale strip. You may have to use something else if it's vinyl. I quit using hull cleaners that contain certain acids that can eat out caulking. Also, check through the archives on this site for instructions on the best way to do the gunwales. It's a lot easier to remove half of the gunwales at a time and work it that way. Good Luck!

Thanks for your informative response. My gunwale strips a wood, mahogany I think. Previous owner had started to apply a mixture of 50/50 boiled lindseed oil and paint thinner. Comments?
Also considering Silicon rubber (RTV) for caulking, applying it, tighten screws almost all the way, allowing full cure, tighten the rest of the way. Coments.
Any ideas about strengthening the mast tabernacle when I reassemble and caulk it?
Aside: Do you live any where near southeastern CT?

If your gunwale molding is Mahogany, then this job is going to be easy. I don't know too much about linseed oil and paint thinner, but everyone I've talked to raves about Cetol. As for the caulking; I'd go with a polysulfide caulking and install the gunwale strips the way you just described. As for the mast tabernacle, I don't know what you mean by strengthening it. I had a cheap cast Aluminum mast tab that came with my 86 O'Day 222 which was bolted through the cabin top with 4 bolts. When I lost my mast back in the 90s off Newport RI, I had a stainless steel hinged mast tab installed on the mast. I also have a utility plate with holes, mounted under the lower half of this plate with 4 bolts going through the cabin which I mounted myself. I added a Teak board under it for shroud length reasons. I live in Taunton, Ma., and belong to the Shawomet Yacht Club on the Taunton River in nearby North Dighton. http://shawometyc.org/
